Everything You Need to Know About the Metaverse

The metaverse has been something that science fiction writers have written about and dreamed of, but now it’s becoming a reality. It’s important to understand what this concept is and how it works, especially if you plan on being an active participant in the future of technology and science. The following guide will walk you through everything you need to know about the metaverse, including its history, its current uses, what it means to our future as well as tips on how to get started using this revolutionary technology today.

What is it?

The metaverse is a collective virtual shared space, created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical reality and physically persistent virtual space, including the sum of all virtual worlds, augmented reality, and other minds. The term was coined in Neal Stephenson's novel Snow Crash. It has also been called: (1) The Global Brain; (2) The Holographic Universe; (3) Virtual Reality; (4) Cyberspace. John Perry Barlow has called cyberspace the new home of Mind. Let's start by looking at some definitions...

How does it work?

The exact details of how virtual reality will work are still being ironed out. But, if you had to guess, it would look something like this: Users plug a VR headset into their computer or phone and enter a digital world. That world could be a video game, where you play as your favorite hero from science fiction or fantasy; or it could be an actual place — like Japan. Since you're wearing special glasses that can see all around you, your body is tricked into thinking it's actually in another place. Instead of sitting at home watching YouTube, you'd feel like you were hanging out with friends overseas without leaving your house.

How can I use it?

The metaverse is where we can go beyond simple interaction, where we can immerse ourselves in a digitally replicated reality. Virtual worlds are extremely common today, from massively multiplayer online role-playing games like World of Warcraft to life simulation games like The Sims. As much as some people don’t want to admit it, these virtual worlds are becoming our second home—we work there, live there and play there. With augmented reality and virtual reality at a tipping point, it’s time for us all to start thinking about what will be next for our minds.

Is it only sci-fi movies?

The metaverse is a theoretical shared universe that may someday exist on computers and networked computer-enabled devices (such as mobile phones). It is fundamentally built on communication networks, artificial intelligence, virtual reality and an image-based medium. The concept of a metaverse is sometimes confused with a single work of fiction, namely Neal Stephenson's novel Snow Crash; however, it predates that work by decades. The idea has recently been advocated by people including Mark Zuckerberg and Philip Rosedale as a form of social media.[1]

Pros

The metaverse is quite a fantastic idea. Essentially, it's a virtual-reality space that can be used in various ways—from shopping and gaming to education and collaboration. The technology could be revolutionary for educational institutions and corporate workplaces. Imagine, for example, if your child had a special set of glasses he or she could wear at school or at home that was connected to an immersive online environment where he or she could interact with teachers and classmates virtually?

Cons

Everything you need to know about metaverse is what you don’t need, which is a high-tech headset. It would be irresponsible for me as your guide through the metaverse to recommend a product that doesn’t yet exist in order for you to experience it. Technology and science have not been created yet so we will have to wait. For now, I suggest reading some books that inspired sci-fi writers: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, or Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson.
